THE WOO:
A LATIN JAZZ SUITE FOR SOPRANO SAXOPHONE
A Latin jazz rendition of the timeless “Wizard of Oz” score. Featuring Jovino Santos Neto, Mark Levine, Michael Spiro, David Belove and Paul van Wagenegan.
“The Woo: A Latin Jazz Suite for Soprano Saxophone is MacDonough’s most ambitious effort to date. None of the old Wizard of Oz tunes are disassembled beyond recognition; rather, they are spiced up. What may have been originally intended as a loving tribute can stand proudly by itself.” -All About Jazz
“Peter MacDonough’s creative and refreshing arrangements bring new life to the music of this classic movie.” –Latin Jazz Network
“Among the most impressive qualities of the CD is that it is made to be experienced from beginning to end. The songs tell the story of the film through its various layers of rhythm and melody, mood and tempo. –JazzTimes
“I had always been inspired by the story of the great jazz guitar player, Charlie Christian. He revolutionized the guitar almost single-handedly by studying guitar with a sax player. As a result, he laid the groundwork for future greats like Wes Montgomery, who played single line melodies instead of the strumming style that guitar (& banjo) had been limited to since their introduction to jazz. In a somewhat shallow attempt to accomplish something similar, I decided to find the best drummer I could, and have him teach to play drums on saxophone. That drummer, and the percussionist on this album, was Michael Spiro.” – Peter MacDonough
